Prospect Heights has a cardiac save
6/26/2013
On June 18 a Prospect Heights ambulance and fire engine crew responded to a local hotel for a cardiac arrest. On arrival, CPR was being provided by the hotel security guard. The crews quickly assumed care of a 62 year old male patient and assessed him to be pulseless with an idioventricular rhythm. CPR was continued, accompanied by drug intervention and advanced airway procedures. Shortly after receiving these interventions, there was a return of circulation and a tachycardic rhythm on the monitor. Hypothermic induction was begun during transport.
When the patient arrived at Glenbrook Hospital, there was a pulse and blood pressure. The patient was rushed to the cardiac cath lab. All of the patient’s coronary arteries were found to be free from occlusion. An implantable defibrillator was inserted and the patient was admitted to the ICU.
Congratulations to the following paramedics: Primary Jonathan Grossmann, Secondaries Jay Gorecki and Michael Kreher. Engine Crew paramedics: Alan Grzeslo, Kelly Cossman, Ed Kotowski, Robert Lampen, as well as paramedic student Patrick Herling. This team of professionals worked together to provide optimal care which resulted in a successful resuscitation. The assistance of the hotel security guard, who was performing CPR was also a critical component in the care of this case.
