This case is going to have intense national scrutiny and may be a game changer for EMS as it processes through the legal system depending on the outcome.
We are already seeing the difficulty of continuing to work collaboratively with law enforcement based on new Illinois legislation and responses to persons with mental and behavior health issues The authors of this article provide an excellent framework for us to continue our local discussions.
I will be looking at many of our policies to ensure that we are framing EMS duties in alignment with the definitions provided by this article and we will also double down on our QI process to ensure that we have closed loop feedback and communication when SOP and/or policy noncompliance are revealed.
