Buffalo Grove April "Save" presentation

5/22/2015

In early April, at a local music store, Mr. Christopher Browne, a store employee, heard a loud crashing sound at the stage, where there was an “open mic. night” going on.  Upon investigating, he noted a person collapsed on the stage.  He instructed a coworker to call 9-1-1 and after assessing and recognizing the need, he initiated CPR.

Officer Greg Hill of the Buffalo Grove Police Department was two doors away from the address when it was dispatched, and upon hearing that CPR was being performed, he brought the Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) with him. Once he was at the patient’s side, he recognized that Mr. Browne was doing adequate CPR and prepared the AED. Once the AED was attached to the patient, it gave the indication to apply a shock and began to charge.

At this time the crews of Tower 25 and Ambulance 25 arrived on the scene. They allowed the AED to deliver one defibrillation and then they applied their cardiac monitor. Advanced life support treatment was started. The shift Battalion Chief arrived; recognized the need for the initiation of the “pit crew” procedure, and had Engine 26 respond to assist.  Buffalo Grove Fire Department personnel continued their aggressive ALS care and transported the patient to Northwest Community Hospital where the patient survived the cardiac arrest event and was discharged.

The Village of Buffalo Grove recently presented a citation to Mr. Browne, Officer Hill  and the Fire Department crews involved in this cardiac save, which clearly demonstrates the chain of survival.
